Our Scoutmaster Selected for Torch Relay!
The local torch carriers gathered in front of San Jose's City Hall
to meet the press and listen to various speakers discuss the Atlanta
Olympics and the torch relay. Paul Wesling is in the back, left-center

Mayor Susan Hammer Presides at the Anouncement
A press conference was held on Feb. 15th to anounce the selected torch
bearers for the Olympic Torch Relay; Mayor Susan Hammer of San Jose, CA
presided, with most of the 40 volunteers in attendance. Candidates
were drawn from the Santa Clara Valley, Monterey, and parts of the Central
Valley, selected from 1500 nominees. They will be carrying the torch
through San Jose the evening of May 2nd, and then
up the peninsula to Foster City on May 3rd.
Scoutmaster Interviewed for TV
Our Scoutmaster was interviewed on Channel 11 (our local San Jose ABC
affiliate), and a short clip appeared on the afternoon news (and was
seen be several members of Explorer Post 566!) At a reception later, he
was also interviewed by Channel 4, the NBC affiliate in San Francisco.
Among the past olympians selected to carry the torch in the relay
is Peggy Fleming, gold-medalist figure skater. Paul and Gail are fans
of Peggy, and had all-event tickets to the U.S. National Figure
Skating Championships earlier in the month at the San Jose Arena.
The mayor of Saratoga presented Paul with a certificate at the Council meeting
on May 1st.
